AcademicsReaders Workshop: In this unit, students are Word Detectives as we learn to use snap (sight) words to make new words, notice a problem and stop and solve it, do a s-l-o-w check across the word, and use everything we know. We also ask ourself, "Does this look right? Does it make sense?" Readers read both independently and work with a partner. At the end of a book, students are encouraged to do something: retell, tell about their favorite part, ask questions, discuss things they notice and wonder about. Writers Workshop: This year students will take part in Writer's Workshop as we will work on writing personal narratives, informational, opinion letters, persuasive writing and work on our writer's craft. We will write a variety of stories and writing pieces to publish throughout the year. We are currently writing How-To books from personal experience. Topics range from how to tie your shoes to how to make a bed. Mathematics: Students are learning mastery of key number facts and fact strategies for single-digit addition and subtraction. We are using the number rack to help students see number combinations, find the sum of two numbers, and compare two numbers to find the difference between them. We will then focus on developing place-value understanding and solving addition combinations to 20. The final module uses Unifix cubes to help students develop understanding of the difference model of subtraction. |
